Letter from Fr Ossie about Second Collection
30 April 2020
Dear Fellow Parishioners,
We are living in extraordinary times which none of us have ever experienced before with the COVID-19 pandemic.
In all my years as a priest I have never experienced the suspension of public Masses or parish gatherings. I know for many this is a cause of great sorrow, but we cannot lose heart and the work of the parish must go, although just in a different form. I continue to provide pastoral support by telephone as much as possible and I visit some of the elderly and sick people.
To continue to operate, your parish requires funding. The Archdiocese is helping where it can and it is working with the Catholic Development Fund to provide loan relief for those parishes with loans for the next six months and the Archbishop has suspended the 2020 Archdiocesan Assessment which supports the works of the Archdiocese.
While these measures help limit our outgoing monies, raising some revenue is in our own hands.
This is a difficult issue to raise for the parish, given that we are entering uncertain economic times, and the financial effects are evident. I appreciate whatever you can provide and understand those experiencing hardships may need to re-evaluate their level of support.
Our main source of funding comes from the planned giving contributions, which many of you already contribute to via direct debit, and this a wonderful gift which we can rely on. With no public masses, there is no Second collection, and this is creating a significant shortfall in our revenue and will reduce our ability to meet financial commitments in the future. This is particularly important going forward because we will need to demonstrate to the Diocesan Resources Committee that we have the capacity to meet our ongoing mortgage obligations.
The simple solution is direct debit.
Could I encourage everyone to use our parish’s direct debit facility to ensure that your planned giving contribution (Second Collection) is maintained through these testing times.
If you wish to contribute on a regular basis to the Second Collection, now and into the next financial year, which begins July 2020, please complete the Pledge Form enclosed with this letter and return to the parish office either by scanning your application via email to or dropping it in the parish letterbox. Of course, you may make a lump sum contribution occasionally at any time.
For those who wish to contribute to the Second Collection in support of your parish, the bank details are as follows –
Account Name: Holy Family Como
BSB Number: 036-050
Account Number: 790041
Please provide your Last Name, so that this can be identified and recorded in our accounts accordingly.
For those already using the direct debit for your parish contributions, I deeply appreciate your commitment and support of the parish. It means the work of your parish can continue during these difficult days.
Please be assured that in my daily private mass I am praying for you all, your families and all parish intentions.
Father Ossie Lewis, Parish Priest
